Online Quilting Bee Skill Builder Block 12

Online Quilting Bee Block 12

Can you believe it? We made it to the final block and what a year it has been! We’ve enjoyed sewing along with you all year and thank you for joining in! Don’t worry, these posts aren’t going anywhere, so if you need time to catch up, you can easily do so.

If you missed block 11, you can get instructions for it here: Online Quilting Bee Block 11 For more information, you can head to the main Quilt Along webpage and it will outline all the details. Scroll down below the video for fabric requirements.

The final quilt block explores foundation paper piecing. We’ve come to find people either love or hate it, we definitely love it (check out our I Spy book for proof). If you aren’t sure about foundation paper piecing, go slow and give this block a shot. We’ll walk you through adding each piece and you’ll have it mastered in no time. Don’t forget you’ll need to make 4 of each section, so print the set of templates 4 times.

Each block will finish at 18″. The final quilt will be 64×84″.

Fabric Requirements:

There are 2 different options for this quilt, make the sampler, consisting of 12 different blocks, or make a quilt of just this block, repeating it 12 times.

Block Twelve Instructions

NOTE: When cutting fabric for the sampler quilt, cut only what you need, leaving extra fabric in large in tact pieces. DON’T cut long strips to cut down. This will ensure you have the sizes and pieces you need for later blocks.

For this block, there are no pieces to precut, use up the extra pieces and sections from previous blocks.

Templates: Print 4 copies. Print at 100%. DO NOT SCALE. Use the 1″ box to make sure your templates are the correct size. The 1″ box should line up perfectly with the lines on your ruler. If they are even a little bit too small or too big, your block will be the wrong size.

Block Construction

Template A

  • Locate template A and note the numbers on the sections.
  • If desired, color in each section to match the correct fabric. This is especially helpful if you are using different colors than we are. You don’t have to color it in completely, just a small area so you remember what fabric to use.
  • Line up white fabric under section A1, making sure it is covered completely with at least 1/4″ all the way around. The right side of your fabric will face down.
  • Fold on the line between section A1 and A2. Cut a 1/4″ seam.
  • Line up the dark green fabric under the white piece, making sure they are even along the cut edge (you can trim the green fabric if needed) and that the green fabric covers section A2 completely.
  • Pin in place.
  • Sew along the line between the sections directly on the paper. Fold fabric back. Finger press the seam.
  • Fold template back along the line between section A2 and A3, trim seam to 1/4″.
  • Place White fabric along edge of dark green fabric, covering section A3. Pin in place. Sew on line.
  • Repeat steps above adding piece A4 (White) and piece A5 (Yellow).
  • Press well with the iron.
  • Trim around the outside of the piece on the outer 1/4″ seam line. Remove paper.
  • Make 4 A sections.

Template B

  • For Template B you’ll follow the same steps using the light green, white, and gray fabric.
  • Make 4 B sections.

Sew the sections together

  • Layout your pieces, alternating A and B sections.
  • Sew 1 A section to 1 B section.
  • Sew 2 quarters together.
  • Sew 2 halves together.
  • Note: We ironed all the seams in the same direction radially around the block to make for a flatter block and to make it easier to line up the sections.
