Online Quilting Bee Block 4

We are now on Block 4!

If you missed block 3, you can get instructions for it here: Online Quilting Bee Block 3 For more information, you can head to the main Quilt Along webpage and it will outline all the details. Scroll down below the video for fabric requirements.

This month, we are learning one of our absolute favorite blocks, Half Square Triangles. HST’s can easily be used to make an entire quilt top. There are endless ways to lay them out and create a unique quilt top.  If you want more information on how to construct half square triangles in different sizes, we’ve created a blog post dedicated specifically to them.

Half Square Triangles

For this month’s block, we will be making half square triangles 2 ways. We will use the 2 at a time and 8 at a time method. These are our favorite ways to make them, as they don’t leave any bias edges that we have to watch. There are LOTS of little blocks that we will be putting together though. Find a nice spot to lay it all out to help keep things sewn together in the right place.

Each block will finish at 18″. The final quilt will be about 64×84″.

Fabric Requirements:

There are 2 different options for this quilt, make the sampler, consisting of 12 different blocks, or make a quilt of just this block, repeating it 12 times.

Sampler Quilt Fabric Requirements (assuming 40″ wide fabric):

Finished quilt : 64×84″

White – 4 yard
Dark Green (including border) – 2 yards
Light Green – 1 1/4 yards
Gray – 1 yard
Yellow – 1 yard

Block 4 Quilt Fabric Requirements (assuming 40″ wide fabric)

Finished quilt 64×84″

Dark Green (including border) – 1 3/4 yard

Block Four Instructions

NOTE: When cutting fabric for the sampler quilt, cut only what you need, leaving extra fabric in large in tact pieces. DON’T cut long strips to cut down. This will ensure you have the sizes and pieces you need for later blocks.

Half Square Triangle Construction

2 at a time

Place one yellow 3 1/2″ square on top of one dark green 3 1/2″ square. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Sew 1/4″ seam on both sides of the line. Cut on the line. Press and trim each half square triangle to 2 3/4″ square.

Repeat with remaining 3 1/2″ squares matching a yellow square with each 3 1/2″ dark green and light green squares for a total of 4 dark green/yellow blocks and 4 light green/yellow blocks.

8 at a time

Place one white 7″ square on top of one light green 7″ square. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner in both directions. Sew a 1/4″ seam on both sides of both lines. Cut each block in half vertically, horizontally, and on the diagonal lines. Press and trim each half square triangle to 2 3/4″ square.

Repeat matching 1 white 7″ square to 1 dark green 7″ square and 1 dark green 7″ square to 1 light green 7″ square.

Block Construction

Layout the block following the diagram below. Sew each corner section together. Sew each middle section together. Sew 2 top corners to middle section. Sew 2 middle sections to center square. Sew 2 bottom corners to middle section.
