Online Quilting Bee Skill Builder Block 5

Online Quilting Bee Block 5

Can you believe we are almost halfway done?

If you missed block 4, you can get instructions for it here: Online Quilting Bee Block 4 For more information, you can head to the main Quilt Along webpage and it will outline all the details. Scroll down below the video for fabric requirements.

This month we are moving on to applique. Missy absolutely LOVES applique and uses it in so many ways. She really is the applique queen and we have two other tutorials all about raw edge applique if you want more help on the topic.

Applique with Fusible Web

Applique without Fusible Web

For this month’s quilt block tutorial, we will be using raw edge applique for our block. However, if you prefer to hand applique we’ll show you an easy way to prep your pieces for that as well.

A quick note before we get to the video, use the cutting instructions below and the ones noted in the video, not the ones I said. We made some adjustments to make sure that your block is the full 18 1/2″ square when you finish.

Each block will finish at 18″. The final quilt will be 64×84″.

Fabric Requirements:

There are 2 different options for this quilt, make the sampler, consisting of 12 different blocks, or make a quilt of just this block, repeating it 12 times.

Online Quilting Bee - Sampler Quilt

Sampler Quilt Fabric Requirements (assuming 40″ wide fabric):

Finished quilt : 64×84″

White – 4 yard
Dark Green (including border) – 2 yards
Light Green – 1 1/4 yards
Gray – 1 yard
Yellow – 1 yard

Block 5 Quilt Fabric Requirements (assuming 40″ wide fabric)

Finished quilt 64×84″

White – 3 1/2 yard
Dark Green (including border) – 1 1/2 yard
Light Green – 1 1/4 yard
Gray – 1 yard
Yellow – 1 yard

Block Five Instructions

NOTE: When cutting fabric for the sampler quilt, cut only what you need, leaving extra fabric in large in tact pieces. DON’T cut long strips to cut down. This will ensure you have the sizes and pieces you need for later blocks.

White:

  • 2 @ 10 1/4″ square

Gray:

  • 2 @ 6 7/8″ square

Dark Green:

  • 2 petals using template

Light Green:

  • 2 petals using template

Yellow:

  • 2 @ 6 7/8″ square

Foundation Block Construction

Cut the 2 white squares in half on the diagonal one time creating 4 white triangles total.

Sew 1 yellow square next to 1 gray square. Repeat. Sew the yellow/gray strips together, alternating colors.

Mark the center of one white triangle. Line it up along the top edge of the gray/yellow strip, matching the center mark with the seam. Sew and press.

Repeat with another white triangle on the opposite side of the center. Add the final 2 white triangles.

Applique Petals

Download the Template

Print out the petal template and tape the two parts together, matching up the light gray line. When printing, make sure to print at 100%. Do not scale or fit to size. After printing, use the 1″ square to ensure the template is the correct size.

Raw Edge Applique

  • If using raw edge applique, cut out the template and trace around it onto your petal fabric. If you are using a marking pen that does not go away, make sure to trace on the back of the fabric. You will need 2 light green and 2 dark green petals. We do not recommend using ball point pens or permanent markers as they can bleed through over time. Use fabric marking pens/markers/chalk or pencils.
  • Cut out the petals.
  • Use a washable glue stick to attach the petals to the quilt block base. Line the point up in the middle of the block and center it over the gray/yellow seam. The point should be centered in the corner of the block. Place the matching petals diagonal from each other.
  • Use your favorite applique stitch and sew around the outside of each petal. We use a blanket stitch, but you can also use a zig zag or straight stitch. If you do not want your stitching to stand out, use matching thread.

Hand Applique

  • If you are hand appliqueing, cut a few pieces of freezer paper slightly larger than the template.
  • Trace the template onto one sheet of freezer paper on the dull side.
  • Place the freezer paper with template side up on top of another freezer paper piece, matching the shiny side to the dull side. Iron till they stick. Repeat with the final piece of freezer paper, again matching the shiny side to the dull side with the template outline on top.
  • Iron your freezer paper to your light green fabric and cut around it leaving at about 1/4″.
  • Spray this edge with starch.
  • Use your iron to slowly press the edge around the template, easing in excess and the points.
  • Remove the freezer paper template and press one final time. Repeat for the other 3 leaves. You can use the same template over again.
  • Use a washable glue stick or pins to secure your petal in place. Line the point up in the middle of the block and center it over the gray/yellow seam. The point should be centered in the corner of the block. Place the matching petals diagonal from each other.
  • Use a small stitch and matching thread to sew around the petal. Repeat with the other 3 petals.

Finishing Instructions

For both quilts (visual instructions will be included in the final video but written instructions are included here if you are making the one block quilt):

Repeat 4 times.

Sew rows together with 58 1/2″ sashing strips between them.

Sew 2 white WOF strips together, cut into a 78 1/2″ strip. Repeat with 2 more WOF strips.

Sew 2 white WOF strips together, cut into a 62 1/2″ strip. Repeat with 2 more WOF strips.

Sew 78 1/2″ border strips to the sides of the quilt top. Sew the 62 1/2″ strips to the top and bottom of the quilt top.

Hi, I am currently working on Spellbound. I have run into several problems and wondered if there are any corrections.
    (1) What size are your charm squares?
For the edge 1/2 square triangles of print is a charm square cut in half and for the background it is a 4.5″ square cut I half. Is this correct? It doesn’t fit.
    (2) the dashing strips don’t seem to fit correctly starting at 31.5 inches
Could you please help with this. I purchased my pattern at Stache Fabric and Notions in
    London Ontario Canada

    1. Yes! I’m going to send you an email. Also, I apologize for the delay, we don’t see these comments as quickly as emails.

  2. Looks so pretty! Just wondering .. would we need a 1/4 seam allowance on the edge of that petal tip in the corner? Otherwise wouldn’t we lose that little petal tip? (Maybe this is just regarding your mockup image; I haven’t had the chance to actually build the build. )

    1. Yes! After we got it together, we realized our measurements weren’t quite right and it was slightly smaller than it should be. We corrected those in the written instructions, so if you cut the white the 10 1/4″ you should have that extra 1/4″ around. Ignore the size I gave in the video and use the written ones.
