Online Quilting Bee Skill Builder Block 6

Online Quilting Bee Block 6

This month marks block 6 and we are halfway through the year!

If you missed block 5, you can get instructions for it here: Online Quilting Bee Block 5 For more information, you can head to the main Quilt Along webpage and it will outline all the details. Scroll down below the video for fabric requirements.

This month we are focusing on Bias Edges. If you aren’t familiar with bias edges, you might wonder why we are focusing on them. When you cut fabric on the bias (on a diagonal from the selvage) there is extra stretch in the fabric. If you aren’t careful, you can easily distort your quilt block. For this block, we include extra tips on how to help prevent that.

This month’s block is lots of triangles. We will be cutting squares in half before assembling. Due to this, you may need to trim it up a little at the end. You’ll want your final block to be 18 1/2″ square.

Each block will finish at 18″. The final quilt will be 64×84″.

Fabric Requirements:

There are 2 different options for this quilt, make the sampler, consisting of 12 different blocks, or make a quilt of just this block, repeating it 12 times.

Block 6 Quilt Fabric Requirements (assuming 40″ wide fabric)

Finished quilt 64×84″

White – 3 yards
Dark Green (including border) – 1 1/2 yard
Light Green – 3/4 yard
Gray – 1/2 yard
Yellow – 3/4 yard

Block Six Instructions

NOTE: When cutting fabric for the sampler quilt, cut only what you need, leaving extra fabric in large in tact pieces. DON’T cut long strips to cut down. This will ensure you have the sizes and pieces you need for later blocks.¬†

White:

  • 1 @ 10 1/4″ square
  • 2 @ 5 3/8″ square

Gray:

  • 1 @ 6 7/8″ square

Dark Green:

  • 1 @ 10 1/4″ square

Light Green:

  • 2 @ 5 3/8″ square

Yellow:

  • 2 @ 5 3/8″ square

Block Construction

Cut the white and dark green 10 1/4″ squares in half on the diagonal. Rotate and cut on the opposite diagonal creating 4 triangles of each color.

Cut all the 5 3/8″ squares in half on the diagonal, creating 4 triangles of each color.

Layout your pieces following the diagram below. The small white triangles will be on the corners, the large white triangles will go in the center edge of each side.

Sew the light green and yellow triangles together along on of the short edges. When lining up, make sure that you are creating two sets that mirror each other.

Sew a dark green triangle to each yellow/light green set. Be careful not to stretch the bias edge and use pins as needed.

Sew one large white triangle  to the bottom right block. Line them up along the right angle letting the tip of the triangle extend past the green/yellow block edge. Repeat sewing another triangle on the opposite side.

Mark the center of the green/yellow block and the center of the small white triangle. Match up these marks and sew. Again, be careful of the bias edges.

Repeat the last two steps with the top left block.

Mark the center of the bottom left green/yellow block and the center of one small white triangle. Match up these marks and sew. Repeat with the top right green/yellow block and last small white triangle. Sew each of these blocks to opposite sides of the gray triangle.

Sew the three rows together, matching seams and letting the tips of the triangles extend past the adjoining row as needed. Trim as needed to have a block that is 18 1/2″ square.
