Explore - A Michael Miller Project

Kimberlee Tanner

We have had so much fun working with Michael Miller Fabrics this year as a brand ambassador! We've loved all the wonderful fabric and creative challenges as we came up with projects to fit each collection. We have one more quilt for you before the year is out!

This quilt uses the Wild and Free collection and let me just tell you, if you love outdoor collections, this one is one of our absolute favorite. When we saw the fabric, we immediately knew it would be perfect for a quilt we had designed, but hadn't had the time to make yet. This quilt has quickly become a favorite amongst our family with multiple requests for one just like it.

While trees are usually green, we welcomed the opportunity to go a little outside the box and use all the different prints instead. The colors are rich and beautiful and could match so many different styles.

When designing the trees, we wanted them to be a little different from what you normally see, so we went for a more modern take. Instead of doing just a triangle, we added a little extra detail.

This quilt was so quick and easy to sew up. The hardest part was making sure to cut all the 60 degree angles correctly. Since we made sure it was all 60 degree angles, you can cut all the pieces with a regular ruler and don't need to worry about templates or anything fancy though!

Our Explore Quilt uses 6 different prints. Each print makes up 1 big tree and 4 small trees.

The prints we used are:

  • Dream Big
  • Forest in Nite
  • Camp Arrows in Juniper
  • Wander in Nite
  • Wild in Juniper
  • Explore Stripe

We used white for the background and a solid brown for the tree trunks.

On the back of our Explore Quilt is Open Sky in Denim and this is the perfect starry sky for any project!

We finished off the quilt with Wild in Yellow. We love the texture that this prints creates.

For quilting, I opted for an all over and went with something with smooth curves to add lots and lots of overall texture.

If you need to make your own Explore Quilt covered in trees, we are working on the pattern and it will be available early next year!

As we finish up the year, we want to say thank you to Michael Miller, it's been a great opportunity. We've loved coming up with different quilts and designs and stretching our creative muscles a little, and hopefully you've been inspired as well! Happy Quilting,

Kimie and Missy
