Monochromality – Quilt Spotlight

Kimberlee Tanner

Monochromality is our latest pattern release and is featured in the current Black and White Edition of Curated Quilts. We had so much fun putting this quilt together and working with Curated Quilts. If you haven’t seen their magazine, it’s definitely worth checking out. There is so much inspiration and goodness to look at! Head to their website to get a copy for yourself.

Fabric Choices

Monochromality was first designed from a Quilt Design a Day prompt, and was a two tone quilt. I loved the simple color palette and had fun playing with the shapes and options for laying it out. Over time, I tried a few different color options, but it was never completed. When I heard the call from Curated Quilts for black and white quilts, I knew I had finally found the perfect match for this design.

In our version, we chose to use solids so the shapes and design took the spotlight. We used Kona Cottons and chose Black, Medium Gray, and White. Since the front was all solids, we found a fun mod print for the back. While most of our quilt backs are solids (I do that so the quilting shows up better), when we do quilts that have minimal color changes and solids, we enjoy sticking a little surprise on the back with a favorite print.

While our version is black and white, this quilt can be made in many different combinations. I love it in a muted color palette as well.

Curved Piecing

The large curves of this quilt make it a great project for a confident beginner quilter looking to improve their curved piecing skills. Templates for all the pieces are included in the pattern, no special rulers are necessary.

Quilt Size

This quilt is a throw sized quilt, but you could easily add or take away blocks to make it smaller or larger. To maintain the same design elements, plan an even number of blocks for both the length and the width.
