Quilt Size(s): Throw 51x60”, also includes a mini quilt and a pillow

Have you ever created something just to prove that you can?  This quilt is the result of one of those ideas that I just had to try and see if I could do it.  If you’ve seen a few of our kid quilts, you’ll know that I love 3D elements and texture in quilts and this quilt really brings those elements alive with 3D flower petals.

This quilt uses a simple stitch and flip technique.  The green and white lattice background is accented with bright pink sashing and multiple borders to add lots of color to the quilt.  A little pin tuck in the petals adds a little more realism to one big whimsical flower in the quilt and in the accent pillow.

This quilt also gives you a bonus mini.  Instead of tossing the leftover pieces why not use them.  They easily go together to create a second mini quilt.  Sew a few additional petals together and then you have a pillow to go with the quilt.  The three together make a perfect nursery set.

FAQs:

  • How do I cut lots of pieces quickly?
    • Layer your fabric and/or strips. You will want to make sure that the edges line up so that the sizes are not altered and don’t add so many layers that your rotary tool can’t get through them easily.  If you have to push harder on your cutter, the fabric can shift on you as you cut it.
  • Do I need special marking tools?
    • Not really, but it also depends on what you are marking. We use a butter knife to mark lines for free motion quilting.  We have used washable markers or color pencils to mark squares.  There are chalk marking tools that are specific for sewing that can be brushed off easily.  You can also find water soluble or heat erase markers or pens.  Whichever tool you decide to use, make sure that you test it first.
  • What’s the best way to press my seams/blocks?
    • Pressing is the magic word here. You want to make sure you press and not iron your seams or blocks.  We press seams and blocks on a wool pressing mat and use a quilters clapper to help flatten them as much as possible.
  • How do I make sure that my sashing or border strips go the full length of the quilt?
    • Measure! Measure your quilt, measure the strips, and then measure again if needed.  After you are sure the measurement is correct then cut the strip.
  • How do I keep the sashing square throughout the quilt?
    • First, you’ll want to make sure that you measure and cut the sashing instead of sewing it to the quilt and then trimming.
    • Second, add a few pins throughout the length of the sashing. This will help you from stretching the sashing as you sew it on.
    • Third, I always use my walking foot when I am sewing longer lengths. This also helps the fabric from stretching as you sew because the top and bottom fabric move together.
