You know how most bunny décor is the front of the bunny with the cute little smile.  One day we were wandering around Michael’s one day looking at all of the fun spring and Easter décor and I came across a cute little bunny picture that showed the back of the bunny instead of the front.  Right then and there I told Kimie we needed a bunny quilt with fluffy tails because how cute would that be.  And because we love ourselves some Easter peeps, we had to use that for our bunny shape.  She went home and started sketching.  I went home and dug some minky out of my stash.  Then we came together looking for fun spring colors to create our bunnies and Bunny Buns was born.

After we had completed the first quilt, Connecting Threads sent us the cutest flannel and we decided that we needed flannel bunnies as well.  So, I got to work on a second quilt.  Now I’ve got another idea for textured bunnies for a table runner and I’m on the hunt for more fabric.  I absolutely love adding texture to quilts and there are so many possibilities with this one.

Bunny Buns uses traditional stitch and flip piecing so it is a great beginner quilt.  We include lots of color diagrams in the pattern to make it easy to follow and a coloring page so that you can test out your colors and how they will look in the final quilt.  You can use minky to get fluffy tails like we did I the first quilt, or stick to cotton.  Our flannel version has white polka dot flannel tails and they are just as cute.

You can purchase this pattern as a full quilt or a single block.  So, if you are just looking for a fun Easter pillow or to make a couple of blocks for a table runner, the single block is perfect for you.  If you want to make a full quilt and don’t want to have to figure out the additional fabric for sashing and borders, then the full quilt pattern is what you’ll want.

FAQs:

  • Do I need any special tools for this quilt?
    • No, you can create most of our quilt patterns (especially this one) with very basic tools, a sewing machine and scissors is all that is required.  A cutting mat, 6x24” ruler and a rotary cutter are what I would consider basic quilting tools and make cutting quilt pieces easier.  I also love my 1x12” ruler for this quilt to trim the excess fabric once you sew the pieces together.
  • How do you choose colors or prints?
    • There are so many answers to this questions.  I'll narrow down a few for you.
      • Kimie has an art degree so she relies on her color wheel and color theory for many of our color choices.
      • We like to get inspiration from color palettes.  There are so many fun color palettes out there.  We have a Pinterest board full of them if you need a little inspiration.
      • Sometimes we find one fabric that we love and then build the rest of the colors around it.
      • We have also tried a completely random method that works out really well.  Check out our YouTube tutorial to see it in action.
  • How do I cut lots of pieces quickly?
    • Layer your fabric and/or strips.  You will want to make sure that the edges line up so that the sizes are not altered and don’t add so many layers that your rotary tool can’t get through them easily.  If you have to push harder on your cutter, the fabric can shift on you as you cut it.
    • If you are using flannel or minky fabric, I don’t recommend cutting more than one layer at a time.  The texture and bulk of these fabrics make “walking” easier and then your blocks won’t be the right size.
  • Do I need special thread?
    • Nope, any basic sewing thread will be just fine for piecing.
  • Do I have to trim my blocks after assembling them?
    • You shouldn't need to do any trimming for these blocks after you have sewn them together.  Make sure you use the rule of measure twice and cut once to ensure that your pieces start out the correct size and you should be all set.
  • What's the best way to press my seams/blocks?
    • Pressing is the magic word here.  You want to make sure you press and not iron your seams or blocks.  We press seams and blocks on a wool pressing mat and use a quilters clapper to help flatten them as much as possible.
    • If you are finding that your blocks don't seem to be the right size after pressing and you pressed to one side, try pressing your seams open instead and see if that solves the problem.
  • How do I keep the sashing square throughout the quilt?
    • First, you'll want to make sure that you measure and cut the sashing instead of sewing it to the quilt and then trimming.  I always fold my sashing in half to find the center and line it up with the center of the quilt to make sure that one half doesn’t end up taking more fabric than the second half.
    • Second, add a few pins throughout the length of the sashing.  This will help you from stretching the sashing as you sew it on.
    • Third, I always use my walking foot when I am sewing longer lengths.  This also helps the fabric from stretching as you sew because the top and bottom fabric move together.   This isn’t required, but it is helpful.
  • How do I make sure that my sashing or border strips go the full length of the quilt?
    • Measure!  Measure your quilt, measure the strips, and then measure again if needed.  After you are sure the measurement is correct then cut the strip.
    • We will always provide the measurements that you should need for sashing, but I still like to measure the rows to ensure that they ended up to be the correct size.
    • We do the same for the borders, but we list those measurements as approximate and provide instructions to measure your quilt so that it ends up as square as possible.
