Confections Quilt Along - Month 2

Kimberlee Tanner

We are ready to sew together our second block for our free annual quilt along.

This month's block is a fun spiral design that looks a little like a wave. We'll be dealing with lots of bias edges, so we recommend starching your fabric before you cut it out.

For all the specifics for the quilt along and links to all the blogs, check out the main quilt along page:

2022 Confections QAL

We'll add each months link to that page and it goes over fabric requirements and schedule. We recommend bookmarking it if you would like to be able to always easily find the posts.

Cutting the White/Background Fabric

Remember, for your white fabric you can simply cut off what you need from your yardage each month, no need to pre cut it down to anything.

  • 1 @ 3 7/8" x WOF
    • Subcut into 10 - 3 7/8" squares
  • 1 @ 3" x WOF
    • Subcut into 10 - 3" squares
  • 1 @ 2 3/8" x WOF
    • Subcut into 10 - 2 3/8" squares
  • Use leftovers of 3" and 2 3/8" strip to cut 20 - 1 1/2" squares

Cutting Month 2 Colored Fabric

From each of the Month 2 sections you will need:

  • 1 @ 3 7/8" square
  • 1 @ 3" square
  • 1 @ 2 3/8" square
  • 2 @ 1 1/2" square

Making the Quilt Block

Blocks will be 6 1/2".

1. Cut the colored 3 7/8", 3",  and 2 3/8" squares plus 1 of each white 3 7/8", 3", and 2 3/8" squares in half on the diagonal

2. Sew 2 colored 1 1/2" squares and 2 white 1 1/2" squares together in a 4 patch.

3. Fold the 2 3/8" triangles in half to mark the center of the long side. Place the two colored triangles opposite each other on the 4 patch, matching centers. (Note: always keep your colored sections on top right corner to make sure your blocks all spiral the same direction). Sew and press.

4. Add the white 2 3/8" triangles to the remaining sides. Sew, press, and trim dog ears.

5. Repeats steps 3 and 4 with the 3" triangles..

6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 one more time with the 3 7/8" triangles.

Repeat with all Month 2 colored sections to make 10 blocks!

Remember, when you are done, find a place you can store all your blocks flat so you don't have to press them all again before we assemble the final quilt. It is not necessary to keep them separated into months at this point. We'll be arranging the final quilt by color.

Month 3 will be released the second Wednesday of March!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Happy Quilting!
