Online Quilting Bee Skill Builder Block 1

Online Quilting Bee Block 1

We are back and ready to jump right back in!

This year, we are starting off with a fun project intended to help each other become more confident quilters. We are hosting a Free Online Quilting Bee Skill Builder Quilt Along. Say that 10 times fast. For more information, you can head to the main Quilt Along webpage and it will outline all the details. Scroll down below the video for fabric requirements.

Let’s get started with block 1! This month we are creating a fun and easy star quilt block using quarter square triangles. We share tips on how to get them to line up and trim them accurately so you have perfect points. Since it’s an easy block, really take the time to focus on accurate seams. Learning how to accomplish this now will help with more complicated blocks in the future. Each block will finish at 18″. The final quilt will be about 64×84″.

Fabric Requirements:

There are 2 different options for this quilt, make the sampler, consisting of 12 different blocks, or make a quilt of just this block, repeating it 12 times.

  1. I have already cut my fabric! I will make it in Blue with cotton and flanel.

    1. You are on the ball! We are excited you are sewing along.

  2. Would you have time to show whether to press seams open or to side, if using steam or dry, and how to handle seams when all seams come together at center? Really helpful for quilt newbies!
Will you also cover sashings, binding, backing suggestions? Will you cover quilting options for each block?
Just want to know what we can expect to finish our final quilts. Thank you for offering such helpful instructions!

    1. Yes! We can certainly address this. The first couple blocks are done, but we’ll make sure to include it to the videos and instructions on the rest of them, especially as the blocks get more complicated.

We will be going over sashing, borders, and putting it all together in the last video. I like the idea of doing some recommendations for quilting, and that fits with other suggestions as plans we have too. Those will be separate videos, but I’ll certainly put together some quilting ideas.

  3. Excited I found this! Hopefully I’ll get started soon! Looks like it will be a beautiful quilt!

    1. I’m excited you found us as well! We’ll be going all year, so just jump in when you can and you should have plenty of time to catch up.
