Online Quilting Bee Skill Builder Block 10

Online Quilting Bee Block 10

This year is wrapping up quick and we are now on Block 10.

If you missed block 9, you can get instructions for it here: Online Quilting Bee Block 9 For more information, you can head to the main Quilt Along webpage and it will outline all the details. Scroll down below the video for fabric requirements.

We are working on curves this week! Quilters sew lots and lots of straight lines, but often times curves can be very intimidating.  They don’t need to be though! Use the tips we teach this week to improve or tackle curves once and for all.  After you feel more comfortable sewing curves in quilts, you can explore a whole new world of possibilities and quilt designs! Something to keep in mind, the larger the curve, the easier it is to sew, so if you are looking for more practice, pick larger curves to start, and work up to designs with smaller curves the better you get.

You will need to print off the template for this quilt. You will find the template below the video and fabric requirements. When printing, make sure it prints at 100% (no scaling or fitting to page). Use the 1″ square to check the size. The lines of your ruler should line up exactly on the 1″ block to make sure it is the correct size.

Each block will finish at 18″. The final quilt will be 64×84″.

Fabric Requirements:

There are 2 different options for this quilt, make the sampler, consisting of 12 different blocks, or make a quilt of just this block, repeating it 12 times.

Block Ten Instructions

NOTE: When cutting fabric for the sampler quilt, cut only what you need, leaving extra fabric in large in tact pieces. DON’T cut long strips to cut down. This will ensure you have the sizes and pieces you need for later blocks.

White:

  • 12 @ 5″ square

Gray

  • 4 @ 5″ square

Yellow

  • 4 @ 5″ square

Dark Green

  • 4 @ 5″ square

Light Green

  • 4 @ 5″ square

Note: If you would like to save fabric, you can skip cutting out the squares and use the template to trace the shapes closer together before cutting out.

Block Construction

 Cut Out Curves

  • Using the templates, cut out curved pieces.
  • White and Gray will use the outer template.
  • Yellow, Light Green, and Dark Green will use the inner template

Sew Squares Together

  • Match up one yellow piece with one gray piece.
  • Fold each piece in half and finger crease the center.
  • Match the centers and pin.
  • Pin edges together, making sure that they line up straight. Add an extra pin in between existing pins.
  • Sew with 1/4″ seam slowly, stretching edges to fit as needed. Use your fingers to make sure there are no tucks as you sew. We sew them together with the outer piece on the bottom and the inner piece on the top.
  • Press the curve toward the outside piece.
  • Repeat with remaining yellow pieces and gray pieces.
  • Repeat with white pieces matched to light green and dark green pieces.

Sew the Block Together

  • Line up the blocks with a solid 5 1/2″ square in each corner, following the diagram below.
  • Sew blocks to form rows.
  • Sew rows together in order.
